This was my second visit to Kouri Island. The moment we drove from Yagaji Island onto Kouri Bridge, we could see the breathtaking, signature Kouri blue in the distance. The deep blue water paired with the straight bridge and its slightly distinctive curve was truly captivating.

On my first trip to Okinawa, I stayed overnight on Kouri Island, and I could never forget that pristine beach. So when I returned to Okinawa this time, I specifically planned to stay on the island for two nights in a row. I wanted to slow down and quietly enjoy Kouri Island's unique, laid-back atmosphere. Compared with a rushed sightseeing itinerary, zoning out while listening to the waves and watching the sunset change was especially soothing. It's a great place for anyone who likes to unwind on vacation and spend some quiet time with their thoughts.

I really love the fresh, mellow aroma of Japanese green tea. The best part is that it has none of the astringency commonly found in tea leaves. For convenience, I especially prefer this kind of tea bag packaging. Whenever I go to Japan, I always stop by Don Quijote or a drugstore to buy boxes of ITO EN green tea bags to bring back to Taiwan. It really is an essential tea to keep at home, and it’s perfect year-round. In the hot summer, I make cold-brew green tea for a cool, refreshing drink; in the winter, I brew a steaming cup and add a little honey, which makes it even mellower and tastier.

It’s great whether I’m enjoying a cup while relaxing at home or serving it to friends and family. This practical and delicious Japanese household staple is definitely a classic product I always haul home whenever I visit Japan.

Speaking of Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory, I first tried it when a friend brought it back from Japan as a souvenir, and I immediately fell in love with its light texture. The outer cake is fluffy and soft, paired with a smooth cheese cream filling that has a rich milky flavor. It's sweet but not too heavy, making it hard to stop after just one bite.

What makes it special is that they also release limited-edition flavors for different seasons, so there's always a new surprise each time I visit. It has now become a popular souvenir that I always pick up a few boxes of at the airport duty-free shop before flying home. If you also like desserts that are rich yet refreshing, this one is definitely worth trying.
CAFÉ GOKAN

CAFÉ GOKAN is located inside Nishihotakaguchi Station, the summit station building of the Shinhotaka Ropeway. It was renovated and reopened in 2025. Situated at a key sightseeing base in the region, it is a popular stop for many travelers visiting the summit area.

After taking the ropeway up to the observation deck, I unexpectedly found this cozy CAFÉ GOKAN while waiting for the clouds to clear. Despite the chilly outdoor air, as an ice cream lover, of course I had to do as the locals do and get some Japanese soft serve.

I ordered their special matcha soft serve, topped with a decorative cookie printed with the character “頂,” which looked especially eye-catching and fun. After buying it, I took it outside to enjoy on the observation deck. Eating ice cream in the cold weather was incredibly satisfying because I didn’t have to worry about it melting and could take my time savoring it. So I enjoyed the rich soft serve while quietly waiting for the clouds and mist to gradually clear, taking in the magnificent snowy mountain scenery. This unique experience in the cold turned out to be enjoyable in its own special way, and I still miss it.
