Shorenka Summer Lights": A Magical Summer Evening at Shoren-in Temple
Shoren-in Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, is known for its beautiful pond-strolling garden that changes with the seasons. While the temple holds special nighttime light-ups in spring and fall, in 2026, it will host its first-ever summer light-up from July 17 (Fri) to August 23 (Sun). The garden’s dreamlike lotus-themed setting is stunning, with plenty of special touches that make summer in Kyoto feel truly memorable.
What is Shoren-in Temple Like?
Shoren-in Temple is one of the prestigious monzeki temples of the Tendai sect and has long maintained close ties with Japan's Imperial Family.
Its origins trace back to a residence for monks at Enryakuji on Mount Hiei, where renowned Buddhist monks such as Saicho and Ennin once lived. The temple's principal object of worship is the Shijoko Nyorai Mandala.
Today, Shoren-in is especially renowned for its exquisitely landscaped gardens, which are considered among the temple's greatest attractions.

What Is "Souda Kyoto, Ikou. Presents Shorenka Summer Lights - Shoren-in Temple"?
Shoren-in Temple is well known for its special nighttime illuminations in spring and autumn, and this year marks the first time the event will also be held in summer.
With Kyoto's increasingly intense summer heat making daytime sightseeing challenging, this evening event offers the perfect opportunity to experience the city's beauty after sunset while escaping the daytime temperatures.
This year's illumination is themed around the lotus, the iconic symbol of Shoren-in Temple, transforming the garden into a magical world of light.
Fresh green maple leaves and the bamboo grove are also beautifully illuminated, creating a refreshing early-summer atmosphere. Photo spots are scattered throughout the grounds, offering plenty of opportunities to capture memorable photos and videos.
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, visitors can also enjoy food stalls from local Kyoto restaurants, adding another highlight to the evening.
Of course, you're welcome to take your time exploring the temple buildings as well. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty, flavors, and atmosphere of a Kyoto summer night with all five senses.

5 Highlights of "Shorenka Summer Lights" at Shoren-in Temple
This event has plenty of special features for enjoying summer nights in Kyoto. Here are five recommended highlights.
1. Dreamlike Garden Filled with Lotus Blossoms
The top highlight is, without question, the dreamlike lotus space spread across the garden in front of the Shinden Hall. Each petal of the 30 lotus flowers is handmade. They are said to be made by heating plastic embedded with washi paper, the kind used for andon lanterns. This creates a soft glow. The display expresses the vitality of lotuses in various states, from full bloom to unopened buds. The blue light surrounding the lotuses is said to be inspired by “the expanse of the universe,” which is connected to the main hall. The lotus flowers light up gradually, so instead of moving quickly through the temple grounds, it is best to sit on the veranda and take in the view at a leisurely pace, or step into the garden to see the lotus flowers up close.

2. Stroll with a Lantern in Hand
Free lantern rentals are available when strolling through the garden. They not only light your way but also make a great prop for photogenic photos and videos. Be sure to capture your memories with a lantern in hand.

3. The Chokushimon Gate Adorned with Blue Lanterns
Another highlight is the illuminated Chokushimon Gate, which is not usually in use. The entire gate is decorated with vivid blue lanterns, creating a special photo spot that is dazzlingly beautiful.

4. Available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays: Enjoy Kyoto Flavors
On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, stalls by Kyoto Arashiyama FUKUSHICHI and Maeda Coffee (*closed on Fridays and holidays) are set up near the exit.
Kyoto Arashiyama FUKUSHICHI offers matcha beer, chilled mitarashi dango, and black warabi mochi, while Maeda Coffee serves three types of cold drinks.
After a relaxing stroll through the temple grounds, be sure to enjoy flavors that feel distinctly Kyoto.

5. Eco-Friendly Shoe Bags for a Greener Visit
This event also reflects a commitment to sustainability.
Visitors to temples and shrines in Japan are often given plastic shoe bags after removing their shoes before entering the buildings. At this event, however, reusable cloth shoe bags are provided instead (*please note that the bags are not available to take home), helping reduce plastic waste.
This environmentally conscious initiative reflects the temple's efforts to promote more sustainable ways of experiencing and preserving Japan's cultural heritage.
Summary
Experience this cool, dreamlike, summer-only special light-up at Shoren-in Temple. Enjoy a relaxing summer night in Kyoto.
