The Great Buddha of Kamakura at Kotoku-in Temple
Situated in the ancient capital of Kamakura, the "Great Buddha of Kamakura" is a symbol of the city, and a part of the temple grounds.
As the principal object of worship at Kotoku-in temple (officially known as Daii-san Kotoku-in Shojosen-ji), the Buddhist statue of Amida Nyorai enjoys tremendous popularity among the famous spots of Kamakura.
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is familiar for the intensity of its presence.
With a height of approximately 11.312 meters and a weight of about 121 tons, it boasts an overwhelming presence befitting the name of Dai-butsu, or Great Buddha.
Be sure to have a look at the powerful pair of Nio statues guarding the Nio-mon gate.
Another not-to-be-missed sight is the massive "straw sandals" displayed on the inner walls of the Kotoku-in corridor. Measuring about 1.8 meters long, 0.9 meters wide, and weighing approximately 45 kilograms, it seems to be just the right size for a Great Buddha.

One of the three great Buddhas of Japan—it's really impressive! It's just a shame the road leading there is so narrow, so traffic jams are pretty common...
