A museum filled with the world of internationally renowned artist Yayoi Kusama. The Kusama experience begins at the polka-dot-covered glass entrance to the sophisticated, urban five-story white building.
This is a rare museum in Tokyo where visitors can regularly view works by Yayoi Kusama. The 1st floor houses the reception desk and museum shop, the 2nd and 3rd floors contain exhibition galleries, the 4th floor features an installation, and the 5th floor has a rooftop gallery and a reading area with books related to the artist.
Each work has a powerful presence, and Kusama’s artistic vision is particularly striking against the white building. Past exhibitions have also featured works from various periods of her career, offering insight into the life of the artist, who was born and raised in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, as well as creations beyond the polka dots for which she is best known.
Admission to the museum is by timed reservation, with a limited number of visitors allowed per session. Tickets for the month after next go on sale exclusively through the museum’s website on the 1st of each month. Each session lasts 90 minutes. The limited capacity prevents overcrowding, and as the building is relatively compact, visitors have ample time to view the exhibits.
The route through the museum is generally one-way, with visitors taking the stairs up and the elevator down. This may vary depending on the exhibition. On clear days in particular, take in the sweeping view of Tokyo from the 5th floor before heading back down.
