The museum is located within the premises of the World Heritage site, Byodoin, famous for its magnificent Phoenix Hall (Hou-ou-do) which recreates the Pure Land of Bliss in this world. The building is mostly underground to harmonize with the scenic views of the elegant garden designated as a historic site. Ingenious use of natural light and creative lighting create a dramatic space that doesn’t feel like it’s underground.

The museum houses a wide array of valuable cultural assets and temple treasures, including the “Bonsho” (temple bell), which is designated as a National Treasure, the “26 Statues of the Praying Bodhisattva (Buddhist Saint) on Clouds”, a “Pair of Phoenixes”, and “The Eleven-faced Kannon (Juichi-men Kannon)”, which is an Important Cultural Property.
Also on display are excavated artifacts from the time Byodoin was founded, including Heian period demon tiles, eave tiles, and pottery. Another highlight is the colorful restoration video of the interior of the Phoenix Hall, recreated using the latest digital technology.

In addition, the museum has made thoughtful structural use of one of the largest glass wall cases in the country to enhance the spatial characteristics of the exhibits. Experience another side of Byodoin through this deeply memorable spatial experience.
