Last update :

Located in Atami, one of Japan's most prominent geisha districts, the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture boasts around 50 geisha agencies, known as "okiya," with approximately 100 geigi (geisha) actively performing. In 1998, the Geigi Kenban (a union of okiya) was opened to the public to promote Atami's traditional geigi culture. This allows visitors to enjoy professional dances that are usually not easily accessible.

Performances, titled "Geigi Kenban Burari—Yumemachi Odori Hana no Mai," are held every Saturday and Sunday. These take place at the Atami Geigi Ren Kaburenjo, the practice hall of the geigi union. The one-hour performance starts at 11 AM and features a harmonious blend of "jikata" (musicians) playing instruments like the shamisen, and "tachikata" (dancers), offering a captivating stage experience.

In October 2023, the Atami Geigi Chaya opened on an adjacent vacant lot. This reservation-only facility allows visitors to experience geigi culture through dance and traditional games. There are three course options, including a matcha tea course.
