Located near Murodo, known for its heavy snowfall, the "Otani" area boasts abundant snow accumulation, with depths approaching 20 meters. This area is part of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a world-renowned mountain sightseeing route featuring peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in elevation. Every year from April to June, the Tateyama Kurobe Snow Valley Festival takes place, centered around the Otani area.

During the festival, various events are held throughout the region, allowing visitors to experience the majestic nature of Tateyama Kurobe. The main event, the "Snow Otani Walk," enables participants to walk along a path squeezed between snow walls, sometimes reaching heights of 20 meters. For the best views of even higher and whiter snow walls, it's recommended to visit in mid-April immediately after the festival's start.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Tateyama Mountain Range and Toyama Plain from the "Tateyama Snow Terrace" and explore the enchanting scenery of the "Snow Tunnel." Since events vary depending on the period, please check the official website for detailed information.

Highlights

  • Events held in the Otani area of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from April to June.
  • The "Snowy Otani Walk," where you walk right beside the snow walls, is a highlight.
  • Please note that the duration of each event varies.

Tateyama Kurobe’s Snow Wall is absolutely one of those dream destinations I think everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime!
Standing between snow walls over 10 meters high is truly breathtaking. It feels like stepping into a world of ice and snow. The Snow Wall Festival, open only in spring each year, lets you walk up close along the snow wall path and experience this incredible sight for yourself. Every photo looks like a postcard.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan, I highly recommend adding Tateyama Kurobe to your itinerary. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime place where you can experience an unforgettable snowy wonderland in person!

As soon as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route opened this year, I immediately planned a holiday trip there. I finally got to visit this long-dreamed-of destination!

This year, the snow walls in Yuki no Otani were about 11 meters high, which was a little lower than I had expected. But standing there in person between those massive snow walls was still incredibly impressive. The weather was clear that day, and the contrast between the blue sky and the bright white snow walls was gorgeous. Every angle looked beautiful, like a dreamy scene from a postcard.

Taking the different modes of transportation along the route and enjoying the magnificent views of the Tateyama mountain range made the whole trip full of surprises and emotion. Tateyama Kurobe is truly a stunning place you should visit at least once in your life. Highly recommended!

I’d been wanting to make a pilgrimage to the Tateyama Kurobe Snow Valley Festival for a long time, and seeing it in person was way more impressive than in photos. The snow walls feel really overwhelming up close, but they’re absolutely stunning.

The snow walls weren't as tall as I imagined, and honestly, they weren't that impressive or awe-inspiring.

Walking through the Snow Valley, the snow walls on both sides looked kind of gray and dirty. It was pretty different from what I imagined snow walls would be like.
