Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art
A museum where you can casually experience art from Japan and around the world.
Located on the 10th floor of the Aichi Arts Center in the heart of the Sakae area, Nagoya’s best-known downtown district, this museum houses a diverse collection of Japanese works, including modern and contemporary Japanese-style and Western-style paintings, as well as sculptures, prints, and works from many other genres.
Its collection of Western-style paintings includes works by artists who drew attention in the Meiji era, such as Yuichi Takahashi and Seiki Kuroda, pioneers of modern Western-style painting in Japan, as well as Ryuzaburo Umehara, Sotaro Yasui, and others who were strongly influenced by Europe and active from the Taisho to Showa periods. Its Japanese-style painting collection covers works by artists such as Taikan Yokoyama, Shunso Hishida, and Seiho Takeuchi, who helped lead modern Japanese-style painting, as well as Gyokudo Kawai, Kiyokata Kaburagi, and Yukihiko Yasuda, whose work developed the genre from the Taisho to Showa periods.
In addition to collection exhibitions featuring carefully selected works from its diverse holdings, the museum holds special exhibitions about four times a year that spotlight a range of artistic trends and artists. With its convenient location, it’s an easy place to stop by and enjoy contemporary art.
