Utsunomiya Kouraku
A beloved Utsunomiya gyoza restaurant where home-style flavor lives on.
Utsunomiya Kouraku is a gyoza specialty restaurant in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. Its roots go back to the gyoza-making techniques the owner's mother learned in Tianjin, China, during the chaotic period after World War II. She later began making gyoza for her children. That flavor was eventually passed down from the family home to the restaurant, which has become one of Utsunomiya's most renowned gyoza spots.
The signature item is yaki gyoza, offering an exquisite balance of fragrant wrappers and juicy filling. Made from dough that is rested before cooking, the wrappers turn crisp when pan-fried and plump when steamed. The sui gyoza also uses Tochigi pork, and because special soup is kneaded into the filling without added fat, it has a light flavor. You can also enjoy ramen and chashu men.
The restaurant has 37 seats in total, with both counter and table seating. It is easy to spot by its red-and-white patterned awning. There is also a factory attached to the shop, and takeout is available. Many tourists fall in love with the flavors of Utsunomiya Kouraku and become repeat visitors.
