A winter flower park spread across the slope of a cape jutting into the Sea of Japan. Karaoto Suisen Park in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture, is known for the more than 2 million Japanese daffodils planted by local residents that bloom across the entire area from winter to early spring.

One of the park’s biggest draws is the view of daffodils blooming against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan. As you walk along the path that follows the slope, you can enjoy both the sweeping flowers and the sea views at the same time. The park is also home to a rare rock vein known as “Karaoto no Jagan,” which is designated as a National Natural Monument.

The best time to see the daffodils is usually from around late December to the end of February. It is a popular spot for enjoying flowers in winter, and on sunny days, the contrast between the blue sea and the white blossoms creates a striking view. The park is relatively compact, making it easy to see the whole area even on a short walk.

There are unpaved mountain paths and steps along the way, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Every January, the walking event “Suisen no Sato Kamate Walk” is held around Karaoto Suisen Park (one way Approx. 2 km), and there may also be pork soup, gifts of cut daffodils, and food stalls.
