Kawatana Onsen

A hot spring destination where historic waters and local legend blend with a calm townscape.

Last update :

Located in western Shimonoseki, Kawatana Onsen is a hot spring area with a history of more than 800 years. A local legend says that hot water began to flow after people deeply enshrined a blue dragon said to live in the marsh that once spread across this area. Later, in the early Muromachi period, the hot spring is said to have been rediscovered by monks from nearby Sankei-ji Temple, an ancient temple. During the Edo period, a private bath for the lord of the Chofu domain was established, and the area became widely known as a hot spring resort for therapeutic bathing.

The waters of Kawatana Onsen are a mildly alkaline sodium-calcium chloride spring. They are known for feeling gentle on the skin and for helping the body stay warm even after bathing. The springs have long been used for therapeutic bathing and are also known as "Bijin no Yu," or "Beauty Bath."

The hot spring town is dotted with accommodations and restaurants, making it a pleasant place for a stroll in a relaxed atmosphere. One of the symbolic spots of Kawatana Onsen is “Mori no Ashiyu Koryusen,” where you can enjoy free foot baths and hand baths. Its building, which combines a translucent roof with natural wood, creates a comfortable space filled with soft natural light, perfect for stopping by during a walk.

One of the charms of Kawatana Onsen is the harmony between its gently sea-, mountain-, and island-surrounded natural setting and the laid-back feel of the hot spring town, letting you spend time a little removed from everyday life. Centered around its hot springs, it is a place where you can enjoy your stay at your own pace.
