Yamaga Lantern Festival

One of Kyushu’s leading summer festivals, woven together by light and dance.

Last update :

Held every August 15 and 16 in Yamaga City, northern Kumamoto Prefecture, a place known for its hot springs. The festival is said to have begun with the “Agari Toro” ritual, in which Yamaga Toro, a traditional craft dating back to the Muromachi period, is dedicated before the deity of Omiya Shrine.

On August 15, to the gentle melody of the local folk song “Yoheho Bushi,” women in yukata gracefully dance through the streets of Yamaga. On their heads are golden lanterns made entirely of washi paper, without using any wood or metal. The delicate decorations, created by skilled toro artisans using highly advanced techniques, are a must-see.

The highlight of the festival is the “Sen-nin Toro Odori” held on the night of August 16 at the grounds of Yamaga Elementary School. The sight of as many as 1,000 women forming multiple circles around a raised tower and dancing is truly magical.

On the night of August 15, a fireworks display is also held along the Kikuchi River running through the city. Approx. 4,000 fireworks light up the summer night sky, drawing many spectators.
