Kaichoen

A hot spring ryokan housed in a wooden building that has been in operation since the Taisho era. Inside, the inn offers a serene, purely Japanese-style atmosphere, and the building itself is striking for preserving the charm of the early Showa period. Many literary figures have stayed here over the years, and works by woodblock print artist Tomisaburo Hasegawa are also displayed, making the ryokan itself something of a historical sightseeing spot. With only 13 guest rooms, this small inn values attentive service and a calm, relaxing stay.

Meals feature an abundance of seafood caught locally in Sakaiminato, including kaiseki cuisine highlighting treasures from the sea such as matsuba crab and nodoguro. Another draw is that meals are served in private dining rooms, letting you enjoy them in a მშვიდful setting.

The hot spring water flows directly from the source and is said to help with neuralgia and rheumatism. A particular highlight is the oldest surviving open-air rock bath, built in the Taisho era. This bath, which still tells the story of Kaike Onsen’s history today, is known for its rustic rock design and gentle spring water, making it a soothing place to refresh after your journey.
