Ikitsuki Island

This island of about 6,000 people lies off the northwestern coast of Nagasaki Prefecture. Accessible from the mainland via two bridges, it has long been a popular destination where dramatic coastal scenery blends with history and culture.

Shiodawara Cliffs, one of the island’s best-known scenic spots, were formed by columnar jointing. Their distinctive shape resembles stacked straw bags of salt. The striking rock formations contrast beautifully with the blue sea, while the dreamlike scenery at sunset is also well worth seeing.

At Obae Lighthouse on the island’s northernmost tip, visitors can take in sweeping views of the East China Sea. Surrounded by grasslands and an open atmosphere, it is an ideal place to slow down and unwind.

Ikitsuki Sunset Way is a scenic coastal road perfect for an invigorating drive or motorcycle ride. The tranquil, moving landscape of blue sea stretching beyond the horizon and lush green grasslands may make you forget the passage of time.
