Tsuyuten Shrine

This shrine stands in Umeda, the bustling heart of Osaka’s Kita district. Its official name is Tsuyuten Shrine, but it is widely known as Ohatsu Tenjin. With over 1,100 years of history, this ancient shrine has long been revered as the guardian shrine of the Umeda and Sonezaki area. Although surrounded by high-rise buildings and commercial facilities, its tranquil grounds offer an escape from the bustle of the city.

The name Ohatsu Tenjin comes from “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki,” a bunraku puppet play by Edo-period playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Based on an actual double-suicide incident in 1703, the play became highly popular for its depiction of the lovers as an ideal of romantic devotion. The shrine came to be known as Ohatsu Tenjin after the heroine, a courtesan named Ohatsu. Bronze statues of Ohatsu and Tokubei and a monument associated with them stand within the shrine grounds, preserving the story’s connection to this place.

Because of this history, the shrine is now designated as a Lover’s Sanctuary and attracts many worshippers praying for romantic connections. Popular items include ema votive plaques depicting the couple, related amulets, heart-shaped and paper-cut goshuin seals, and omikuji fortunes accompanied by gold-leaf protective talismans.

Conveniently located within walking distance of JR and subway stations, the shrine is also a popular sightseeing destination where visitors can experience Osaka’s history and culture amid the lively streets of Umeda.
