Nanjo Art Museum
A museum where nature and contemporary art resonate, set in the forest of the World Heritage Site Sefa-utaki.
Located in Nanjo City in southern Okinawa’s main island, Nanjo Art Museum presents itself as a “scenic art museum.” Rather than simply viewing works in exhibition rooms, visitors can experience art through nature, architecture, and spaces of everyday life.
The permanent exhibition room features a wide range of works by contemporary artists from Japan and abroad, including pieces by Yayoi Kusama, Park Seo-Bo, and Zhang Xiaogang. The museum also has a garden, a terrace overlooking the sea, and a café, allowing visitors to enjoy art alongside the natural scenery.
In June 2026, the museum will also open NANJO ART VILLA Tachibana Residence, an art villa available for overnight stays and limited to one group per day. Works by 18 artists who have received the Order of Culture are placed in everyday living spaces such as the living room, bedroom, and Japanese-style room. The close distance between the artworks and the viewer creates the appeal of an experience that feels as if art has blended into daily life.
Surrounded by sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and lush forest, the museum offers a chance to enjoy artworks, architecture, and natural scenery together. It proposes a new way to enjoy an art museum that goes beyond viewing works in exhibition rooms.
