Nara Prefectural Museum of Art
A place to experience Japanese art during your Nara sightseeing.
This prefectural art museum is within walking distance of Kintetsu Nara Station and sits next to Nara Park. It opened in 1973, based on a collection donated by Kanpo Yoshikawa, a Japanese-style painter and researcher of cultural history. Today, the museum houses more than 4,600 works of Japanese art, including paintings, crafts, and sculptures, from the Kamakura period to the present.
The collection is diverse, featuring the Yura Collection gathered by historical philosopher Tetsuji Yura, the Ohashi Collection assembled by businessman and chemist Kaichi Ohashi, and works by artists connected to Nara, such as modern ceramic artist Kenkichi Tomimoto. The museum does not have a permanent exhibition; instead, it regularly holds collection exhibitions and special exhibitions that present its holdings by theme. Its exhibitions can be enjoyed by both children and adults.
Close to Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, it is a great spot to experience Japanese art along with sightseeing in Nara.
