Explore Eastern Hokkaido without a Car: A Summer Bus Journey to Shiretoko

Last update :

The Eastern Hokkaido Express Bus (Summer) connects sightseeing destinations across eastern Hokkaido from summer through fall. Even without a rental car, you can explore the region’s natural scenery and attractions as you travel to Utoro, a gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shiretoko.

The Monbetsu-Shiretoko Express and Shiretoko-Monbetsu Express connect the Monbetsu area with Shiretoko, following the Sea of Okhotsk coast via the Lake Saroma area and Abashiri. You can enjoy coastal views, lakes, and port towns characteristic of the Okhotsk region as you make your way toward Shiretoko. The Kushiro-Shiretoko Line and Shiretoko-Kushiro Line, meanwhile, link the Kushiro area with Shiretoko, with the Shiretoko-bound service visiting Lake Akan, Lake Mashu, and other sights. The two directions follow different routes, with the Kushiro-bound service also stopping at Rausu, Notsuke Peninsula, and Nakashibetsu. Along the way, you can experience a rich variety of landscapes, including lakes, mountains, and peninsulas.

All services require advance reservations and can be booked online. More than just a way to reach your destination, these buses make travel time part of the experience, with sightseeing stops and ever-changing views from the window.
