When I reached the wooden marker at the summit that reads “Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park, Summit of Mount Takao, 599.15 m,” I saw many hikers lining up to take photos and commemorate their hike. Walking along the forest trail was quite pleasant, with dense trees, old-fashioned red lanterns, and stone steps on both sides.
Visiting Mount Takao in the fall, the most anticipated sight is the mountain covered in red maple leaves. Looking up, the red leaves stood out against the blue sky, while sunlight fell on the red torii gates and temple eaves, creating a beautiful scene. Inside the temple’s main hall, you can see a thick shimenawa rope and intricate wood carvings. Many people were also worshipping there, creating an atmosphere that was both lively and solemn.
Besides hiking, you can also take the cable car or open-air chairlift. Sitting on the chair as it slowly climbs, you can look down over the entire forest and trails, with a very expansive view. When heading back down or after getting tired from exploring, you can enjoy a freshly grilled charcoal-roasted dango skewer. Watching the staff turn the dango over the charcoal fire, the piping-hot dango with sauce is a distinctive local snack.
Mount Takao combines hiking, fall foliage viewing, visits to an old temple, and local snacks, making it a classic destination that is perfect for slowing down and exploring at a leisurely pace.

Mount Takao, just outside central Tokyo, allowed me to experience the beauty and tranquility of nature. As I slowly followed the forest trail uphill, I was surrounded by lush greenery and fresh air. The sounds of birds and wind rustling through the leaves were incredibly relaxing. The beautiful mountain scenery along the way even made me forget how tiring the climb was.

The sweeping view from the summit was stunning. On clear days, you may even get a distant view of Mount Fuji. The magnificent scenery left a lasting impression on me. Mount Takao also has historic and cultural attractions such as Yakuoin Temple, making the trip even more rewarding.

This trip gave me the chance to enjoy hiking, reconnect with nature, and feel refreshed both physically and mentally. I hope to return during another season to see the cherry blossoms, fall foliage, and other seasonal scenery—and make even more wonderful memories.

Mount Takao feels like an amusement park—starting with the chairlift, my heart was already racing.

Even though it’s a hike, it’s super beginner-friendly. The trail is gentle and easy to walk, and you can reach Yakuo-in Temple with a relaxed stroll. After praying there and taking a short break, we headed toward the summit… and that’s when the real challenge starts!

Reaching the top felt like clearing a level—so satisfying. I just found a spot to sit, ate the snacks I brought, and looked out at the mountains in the distance. Total reset for both body and mind.

A mountain that’s close to the city center, and you can start hiking almost as soon as you get off the train.
Takao isn’t just about the trails—there’s also a cable car and lift, some small places to grab food, sightseeing spots, and temples and shrines. The whole mountain feels like a tourist destination.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but you can climb it even with fairly light gear.

The cable car is super steep, so the ride is a bit thrilling. The view from the top is totally worth the ticket price.

It was cloudy the day I visited, so I couldn't see the top of Mt. Fuji from the summit, but the weather was comfortable and I still had a great time!
