When I traveled to Hokkaido for the first time, I originally wanted to try riding a JR East train, but the railway wasn't open yet at the time, so I'll have to put it on the list for my next trip.

I've always felt that traveling by train has a special charm. You can sit back and slowly enjoy the scenery along the way, and easily visit different cities without having to drive yourself. Hokkaido's natural scenery along the route is also something to look forward to!

If you have the chance to visit Sendai, I highly recommend including the Yamagata area in your itinerary as I did. For international travelers, making good use of the JR EAST PASS can save you a considerable amount on transportation, and the convenience is hard to beat.

Before your trip, just research the eligible routes and number of travel days online. Once you arrive in Japan, you can easily start exploring by bullet train and limited express train. This handy rail pass is definitely the perfect companion for traveling around eastern Japan, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys traveling at their own pace.
