While walking around Matsushima, I could smell an enticing charcoal aroma from a distance. I followed the scent and saw a huge kamaboko standing outside the entrance, and I couldn't resist going in. I've always felt that one of the best ways to travel is to make a point of trying all the local specialties.

When I saw that you could grill your own kamaboko in the store, I immediately decided to get in line and give it a try. I slowly turned the thick kamaboko over a small charcoal grill, watching the surface gradually turn golden brown and listening to the cheerful laughter of the staff chatting with other travelers nearby. I quietly enjoyed this relaxing and fun grilling experience.

The freshly grilled kamaboko was piping hot. The outside was slightly crisp, while the inside was soft and tender, and the rich fish aroma spread through my mouth with every bite. It was a truly unique and delicious experience. If you're visiting Matsushima, I highly recommend stopping here to grill a piping-hot kamaboko yourself and add some delicious memories to your walk.

Not long after setting out on foot from Matsushima Station, you'll see signs for Zuiganji Temple. Following the approach lined with towering cedar trees, you're immediately greeted by the atmosphere of its simple, solemn historic buildings. While walking along the path, I unexpectedly came across a commemorative tree planted by President Lee Teng-hui himself, which made the place feel especially familiar. Unfortunately, I arrived just after closing time, so with a little regret, I quietly took in the peaceful Zen atmosphere of the surrounding area.

I then continued walking along the waterfront and soon saw the landmark Godaido Temple. This old Buddhist hall, standing on a small island by the sea, is steeped in history. Crossing the bridge to the island to pay my respects while looking out over the blue sea and the scattered islands of Matsushima, all while taking in the solemnity of the old temple, was a very special experience.

Although I wasn't able to enter the main hall of Zuiganji Temple this time, simply walking along the cedar-lined path, visiting Godaido Temple, and seeing the shimmering sea alongside the ancient temple made the trip worthwhile. The peaceful atmosphere created by the blend of history and nature was still deeply satisfying.

This time, I took the train from Sendai to Matsushima in Tohoku, one of Japan's famous Three Scenic Views. I had expected to see huge crowds of tourists, but when I got off the train, I was instead greeted by a rare sense of peace and quiet. Along the way, there were breathtaking views of the bay and ancient temples steeped in history, while the enticing aroma of grilled oysters drifted through the air. Strolling around Matsushima was very relaxing and pleasant.

When I reached the red Fukuurabashi Bridge connecting to a small island, I unexpectedly came across a sign about friendship between Taiwan and Japan. As I quietly read the words, I learned that after the 311 earthquake, boat operators at Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan had organized a charity fundraiser to help the local tourism industry get back on its feet.

This trip was about more than just enjoying the beautiful scenery. Walking through Matsushima's streets and historic sites also gave me a deeper sense of its long history and the resilience shown in rebuilding after the disaster. These stories of human kindness seemed to make Matsushima's scenery feel especially warm and moving.
