Lake Inawashiro Sightseeing Boat

A sightseeing boat cruise that lets you tour Lake Inawashiro. Located in Fukushima Prefecture, Lake Inawashiro is the fourth-largest lake in Japan and is also known as Tenkyokō (Mirror Lake) for its clear water. There are two boats (weekends, national holidays, and select periods only): the sightseeing boat Hakuchōmaru and the cruise boat Kamemaru. Each features a cute design inspired by a swan or a turtle, and during the season, each boat runs every 60 minutes.

I was really looking forward to taking a sightseeing cruise on the adorable Hakuchōmaru or Kamemaru, leisurely circling the lake and enjoying the beauty of Lake Inawashiro from the water. Feeling the lake breeze and watching the scenery change would have made for such a relaxing trip.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to board the boat that day, which was a bit disappointing. Although I missed out on the cruise, taking in the lake’s peaceful yet majestic scenery from the shore was still rewarding in its own way.

Next time I visit Fukushima, I’ll definitely make sure to take this lake cruise!

National Treasure: Shiramizu Amida Hall

A hall built in the first year of Eiryaku (1160) in the late Heian period. It is said to have been commissioned by Toku-hime, the wife of the warrior Norimichi Iwaki, who was active in this area, to pray for her husband’s repose. With few Heian-period Amida halls still standing, it is a precious remnant that preserves its original appearance from the time it was founded, and it is the only site in Fukushima Prefecture designated as a National Treasure. Inside are five Buddhist statues, including the Amida Triad (designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan) and the guardian kings Jikoku-ten and Tamon-ten.

I visited Shiramizu Amida Hall in Fukushima, and it’s the kind of place where it’s so quiet, all you hear is the wind and birds. It’s about a 20-minute bus ride from JR Iwaki Station. Get off at the Amida-do stop, then walk another five minutes. The route was easier than I expected.

What surprised me most was that the hall has remained almost unchanged since it was built in 1160. Standing by the pond and seeing Shiramizu Amida Hall reflected in the water made me feel like I’d traveled back to the Heian period. Best of all, I barely saw any international tourists during my visit. There was no line for photos, and I could sit and enjoy the view for as long as I wanted.

If you prefer lively attractions, this place might be too quiet. But if you’re looking for somewhere to truly unwind and experience the atmosphere of old Japan, I’d put Shiramizu Amida Hall on your Fukushima must-visit list.

Mugenkyo Ferry

Navigate the gorge of the Tadami River in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture by ferry for an approximately 45-minute tour. This boat revives the tourist use of the ones that were originally used to cross to the other shore from Kanayama Town's Mifuke settlement, which was once abandoned.

When I visited Mugenkyo Gorge in Fukushima, I was most excited about taking the ferry along the Tadami River. Unfortunately, I missed the boat that day and could only enjoy the scenery from the shore, which was a bit disappointing. Still, the crystal-clear river and lush greenery on both sides were incredibly relaxing, and the fresh air felt wonderful.

I heard that from June through August, river mist often appears in the early mornings and evenings, covering the gorge in a white veil and making it look like a magical wonderland. That's how Mugenkyo, or “Mist-Shrouded Gorge,” got its name.

There’s none of the noise of the city here—just insects, flowing water, and nature all around. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the peace and quiet. If I get the chance to return, I’ll plan ahead and take the 45-minute ferry ride to see the dreamy, misty scenery for myself. I’m sure it will be an unforgettable experience.

Hachiman-bori Canal

Omihachiman city is located in the Koto area on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa in the central Shiga Prefecture. It is a scenic castle town where the blessings of Kokoku (Lake Country) and old and new Western and Japanese culture are alive.

Hachiman-bori really has the feel of an old Japanese street. Walking along the canal, you’ll see Edo-period buildings preserved on both sides, and every photo comes out with a great atmosphere.

Taking a small boat for a slow ride down the canal lets you feel even more of the former prosperity of the Omi merchants. It’s a soothing spot where you can slow down and really take everything in.

Comfort Hotel Gifu is about a 2-minute walk from JR Gifu Station, so getting around is super convenient. It’s a great fit for both independent travelers and business stays.

The rates are affordable, and there’s a free breakfast buffet with plenty of options. The smoothies and local specialty dishes were especially nice. The cozy library café inside also has a great vibe, perfect for relaxing or getting some work done.

Overall, it’s a great-value hotel and definitely worth recommending.

Kobe Anpanman Children’s Museum & Mall

This is a spot for children to meet their hero, Anpanman. The building is divided into two floors, with the museum on the second floor (admission fee applies) and a shopping mall on the first floor (free to enter).

On our second day in Kobe, our first stop was the long-awaited Kobe Anpanman Children’s Museum & Mall! As soon as we walked in, the place was filled with Anpanman and all the familiar characters. My little one was so excited, screaming with joy and smiling nonstop.

There were fun shows, interactive games, photo spots, and super cute limited-edition merchandise. Every corner made us want to take tons of pictures. It really felt like stepping into the world of the anime. It’s not just a paradise for kids—adults will find their inner child again, too.

If you have an Anpanman fan in the family, this is definitely a must-visit spot in Kobe. You’ll come away with so many wonderful memories!

Kanazawa Castle Park

In 1583 (the period of Tensho 11th), Toshiie Maeda entered this castle as the first feudal lord, since then this castle had been used by the Maeda family of Kaga Domain until the early time of the Meiji, later the ruin of this castle was reconstructed to use as a large park for citizens.

Kanazawa Castle Park is a classic must-see spot when visiting Kanazawa. It’s right next to Kenrokuen, so you can enjoy Japanese history and natural beauty in one trip.

The park grounds are spacious, and the well-preserved Ishikawa Gate, impressive stone walls, and reconstructed Hishi Yagura and Gojikken Nagaya are all well worth seeing. It really feels like stepping back into the Edo period.

Strolling along the lush green paths is beautiful both during the day and around sunset, and it’s a great place for photos. The cherry blossoms in spring and fall foliage in autumn are especially charming.

If you’re traveling independently in Kanazawa, I recommend visiting it together with Kenrokuen to experience the unique appeal of this historic city.

Dotonbori

Crab, octopus, cow, crane….these are just a few of the oversized 3D signboards that make up the look and feel of the bustling Dotonbori Area. Its packed with a number of eateries along the northern Dotonbori River and main street along its southern side.

Dotonbori is one of Osaka’s liveliest shopping districts and a must-visit spot when you’re in the city. There are tons of clothing stores, drugstores, and unique shops, plus all kinds of Osaka street food, so you can shop and eat your way through the area.

Whether it’s a weekday or a weekend, it’s packed with visitors from all over the world and full of energy. It honestly makes you not want to leave!

Ebisu Bridge

Ebisu Bridge, which is said to have been constructed almost simultaneously with the excavation of the Dotonbori River.

The Glico running man sign in Dotonbori is a classic must-see landmark in Osaka and one of the most popular photo spots! Taking a picture on Ebisu Bridge while striking the running man pose really feels like a travel ritual.

It has a different charm during the day and at night. There are also lots of restaurants, drugstores, and shopping streets nearby, making it perfect for strolling around, eating great food, and creating unforgettable Osaka memories.

Atsuta Jingu (Atsuta Shrine)

About 1900 years ago, one of the Three Sacred Treasures (in Japanese mythology, the goddess, Amaterasu-Omikami, conferred on them. They were handed down as the proof of imperial succession), Kusanagi-no-tsurugi (sacred sword) , was dedicated here, which is said to be the beginning of this shrine.

Atsuta Jingu is a well-known spot in Nagoya that is absolutely worth visiting. It’s easy to get to, and you can reach it conveniently by train. Even on a weekday, there was a steady flow of worshippers and visitors, showing just how beloved this shrine is. The grounds are full of greenery and have a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Walking through the area, you can really feel its deep history, culture, and sense of dignity. It’s a place where you can briefly escape the noise of the city, and it’s a must-visit on any independent trip to Nagoya.
