Uwajima Castle

Takatora Toudou who is historically famous as a warlord and a master of castle construction built Uwajima Castle at hillside with an altitude of 80 m. The castle experienced major repairs taking about 11 years from 1661 by the second Date lord, Munetoshi Date. The castle is one of the existing 12 castle towers in Japan and was selected as a Nationally designated important cultural property.

It's one of Japan's Top 100 Castles and one of the 12 original castle towers still standing. Uwajima Castle is really well preserved.

Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi-ko)

Lake Kawaguchi is known as one of the five Fuji lakes and is a popular spot because of its spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. The lakeside is filled with cherry blossoms in the spring, purple lavender in early summer, and autumn leaves in the fall, making each season a different and beautiful sight. Lake Kawaguchi is also known for having the only "island" and "bridge" in the Fuji Five Lakes.

Kawaguchi Lake is the most developed and lively of the Fuji Five Lakes. Lots of big local festivals and cultural events are held here.

Kyoto city KYOCERA Museum of Art

It started as Japan's second largest public art museum, Tairei Kinen Kyoto Art Museum, that commemorated then-emperor's enthronement, then the name was changed to Kyoto City Art Museum. In spring of 2020 after a renovation, it was reopened as Kyoto City Kyocera Art Museum.

The exterior looks beautiful and has a modern vibe. It takes a little over 10 minutes to walk to the museum from the station.

Oga Onsen Village

This hot spring village is located in the northern part of the Oga Peninsula. It is said that Sakagami Tamuramaro, a Seii Taishogun (Barbarian-subduing Generalissimo,) discovered the hot spring during his expedition to the east, and the feudal lord of Akita also visited this historic hot spring resort during the Edo period (1603-1868).

You can spot Namahage everywhere on the Oga Peninsula in Akita. During dinner at the hotel, they came out and asked us for sake. Some kids in our group ended up bursting into tears!

Esashi-Fujiwara Heritage Park

This theme park was created on the birthplace of Oshu-Fujiwara Clan’s first Lord, Kiyohira. On the 20 ha-(49 acres) premises, you can time-slip into the Heian Period and experience the era through watching, playing, eating and buying to learn about Oshu-Fujiwara Clan’s history and culture.

Ueda Castle

The castle, built under the direction of Sanada Masayuki in 1583, was known as impenetrable after defeating the Tokugawa army in the first and second battles of Ueda. After the battle of Sekigahara, it was demolished, but Sengoku Tadamasa, the lord after Sanada, restored the castle. Matsudaira inherited it afterwards, then, the Meiji Restoration came to pass.
