Standing on the streets of Ginza, surrounded by eye-catching ads and all kinds of architecture, you realize it has long gone beyond being just a shopping district. Each luxury flagship store feels like an arena for the world’s top architects. They weave the spirit of each brand into the facades and structures, making these buildings works of architectural art you can’t take your eyes off while strolling around.

Tokyo Station: Marunouchi Station Building

The construction of Japan’s front gate, Tokyo Station, began in March, 1908 and it was opened in December, 1914. Kingo Tatsuno, the pioneer of modern architecture in Japan, designed it. The steel-framed, brick Marunouchi Station building was burned on the roof and interior in the 1945 air raid.

Every time I enter Tokyo Station, it feels like stepping into a huge maze. The high domed ceiling really makes you stop and look up.

With its modern, varied electronic payment options, getting in and out is really convenient. Since the cards are now minimalist in design, I got a registered card as a souvenir.

It has my name printed on it, so it’s not just my own personal travel pass. Every time I see it, I’m instantly reminded of the feeling of walking through the streets of Tokyo and looking up beneath the dome at Tokyo Station.

Lunch Pack

This sandwich series packs ingredients between slices of soft, fluffy bread. The edges of the slices of bread are pressed together, sealing the contents by fusing all the sides, so these sandwiches are easy to eat and won’t get your hands messy! There are prepared foods, sweets, and whole-grains series available.

When traveling in Japan, I usually book places without breakfast.
Then I go to a convenience store or supermarket to buy something.
It’s cheap and tasty, and they often release new flavors, so I can try something different every time.

Kinoko no Yama

Kinoko no Yama, a long-selling product that represents Meiji Co., Ltd. (hereafter, Meiji), has been a beloved national chocolate snack across generations since its launch in 1975. Its most distinctive feature is its cute mushroom-shaped form. The cracker is light and fragrant, while the chocolate portion has a two-layer structure that gives it a smooth melt-in-the-mouth texture. The slight saltiness of the cracker brings out the sweetness, while the clean finish makes it easy to enjoy.

The super classic Kinoko no Yama.
They look like cute little mushrooms. The caps are rich chocolate, and the stems are crispy biscuit sticks. Each one is bite-sized and doesn’t get your hands messy.
Kinoko no Yama and Takenoko no Sato are often displayed together, so I usually buy both.

Chicken Ramen Donburi

Chicken Ramen, the once-bagged variety now comes in a cup. It features a light and clean flavor derived from all-original chicken stock and roasted soy sauce. The taste is rich and smooth, featuring fluffy heaps of eggs as its main topping.

Kids love it! Add an egg and it tastes amazing. It comes in both cup noodle and single-pack versions.
Buying a whole pack is cheaper, and it’s easy to bring back to Taiwan and eat later.

Aomori Prefectural Asamushi Aquarium

An aquarium that marked its 40th anniversary in July 2023 since opening. Located at the northernmost tip of Honshu, it’s easy to access from Hokkaido, too. Exhibits include a 15-meter-long tunnel tank that recreates the underwater world of nearby Mutsu Bay, and the Marine Mammal House where you can watch penguins, seals, and more swimming underwater, with around 300 species and 8,000 animals on display.

Watching the dolphin show here was so relaxing. The 15-meter underwater tunnel in the aquarium perfectly recreates the unique marine ecosystem of Mutsu Bay. Seeing all kinds of fish and huge rays gliding gracefully overhead really felt like stepping into an actual underwater world. I ended up stopping and watching for a long time without even realizing it.

GariGarikun Soda

Japan’s classic ice treat, GariGarikun Soda, is a simple yet exceptionally well-crafted frozen treat made with soda-flavored ice on the outside and crunchy shaved ice on the inside. Its defining feature is this two-layer structure, with outer ice and inner shaved ice, allowing you to enjoy two different textures in one bar. You spot it right away, and it’s icy, crunchy, refreshing, and seriously tasty.
I have to get one every time I come to Japan.

This free-to-ride pass is available for global tourists and foreign Japan residents alike. It offers unlimited rides for 5 days on JR East lines, including bullet trains, limited express trains, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), the entire Tokyo Monorail line, the entire Aoimori Railway line, and the entire Iwate Galaxy Railway (IGR) line, covering the area from Kanto to Tohoku. Towada Art Center

The museum was opened in 2008 as the central facility of the city's art-based local cityscape project. Many of the works are large three-dimensional works in which the entire space becomes the work of art, rather than paintings. The art square across from the museum, as well as the streets surrounding it, are scattered with artworks, transforming the entire town into an open-air contemporary art museum.

You can really take your time here to appreciate the art and take photos.

A-FACTORY is a good place to stop by at the end of your trip in Aomori Prefecture. It is a spot where you can find a wide variety of foodstuffs, sundries, traditional crafts, and gourmet foods produced in Aomori.

As soon as you walk in, it’s packed with apple products—cookies, dried apples, apple juice, and more. There are also some handmade crafts to choose from. It’s a great place to pick up Aomori specialties.
