I passed by the Kyoto National Museum during my trip and saw its buildings from a distance, but my schedule was too packed to allow enough time for a visit, so I could only hurry past.
The Kyoto National Museum houses many valuable artifacts related to Japanese history and art. As someone who enjoys Japanese culture, I would really like to explore its collection. I hope I can set aside plenty of time to visit the museum properly the next time I come to Kyoto.
Higashi Honganji Temple, Kyoto
Higashi Honganji Temple is located in Karasuma Rokujo, near Kyoto Station. Officially called "Shinshu Hongyo", Higashi Honganji Temple is the head temple of the Otani sect of Shinshu Buddhism, built in the 7th year of Keichō era (1602) on land donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu to Kyōnyo Shonin.
In Kyoto, Higashi Honganji Temple draws travelers with its magnificent architecture and long history. Upon entering the temple, the enormous Goei-do Hall is imposing, and its wooden architecture displays the craftsmanship and distinctive features of traditional Japanese temples, giving the place a strong sense of history.
Walking through the spacious temple grounds, the surroundings feel quiet and solemn, in contrast to Kyoto's lively streets. Seeing the buildings that have endured the passage of time and multiple reconstructions gives you a sense of Higashi Honganji Temple's important place in Kyoto's history and culture, as well as a deeper appreciation for the architectural beauty of traditional Japanese temples.
Otaru Aquarium
About 20 minutes by bus or sightseeing boat from JR Otaru Station, the aquarium showcases approximately 250 species and 5,000 marine organisms, primarily from Hokkaido and polar regions.
Otaru Aquarium sits on a hillside by the sea. In addition to seeing a variety of marine life, you can also enjoy Otaru's distinctive coastal scenery. Inside, we watched penguins, seals, and all kinds of fish swimming freely, and the children were filled with curiosity and delight throughout the visit.
Besides the penguins and seals, the jellyfish exhibit was especially memorable. Illuminated by the lights, the transparent jellyfish drifted slowly through the water, their soft bodies swaying with the current. As I watched them float peacefully, time itself seemed to slow down.
Kumamoto Castle
Kumamoto Castle is the famous castle built by Kiyomasa Kato in 1607. It was built using the latest, cutting edge techniques at the time and was the setting of many important moments in Japan’s history.
When visiting Kumamoto, of course you have to stop by Kumamoto Castle, which has deep ties to Kato Kiyomasa. From a distance, the imposing castle walls and towering main keep are an impressive sight, giving you a sense of this famous castle's rich history.
Strolling through the castle grounds, you can see sturdy stone walls and historic buildings. Walking slowly along the castle ruins, you can also imagine the ingenuity that went into its construction.
