It feels like a lot of the shoppers here are people who own villas in the area and come to Karuizawa for vacation.

Shinano Railway's Karuizawa Station
The Karuizawa station building, demolished with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 1997, was revived in October 2017 as the Shinano Railway Karuizawa Station and the Old Station Building entrance. It utilizes the historically significant building that had been preserved as the Old Karuizawa Station Building Memorial Hall, maintaining the serene ambiance characteristic of Karuizawa.
Taking the train to Karuizawa for a trip is actually pretty convenient.

Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street & TOGOSHIGINZA Information Center
Stretching approximately 1.3km east to west from Tokyu Ikegami Line's Togoshi Ginza Station, this shopping district boasts around 400 establishments ranging from fresh produce stores to cafes, bakeries, and bathhouses.
The street is really long and packed with shops. The atmosphere is fantastic.

Lake Ashinoko
The lake is said to have been created about 3100 years ago when a phreatic explosion caused by volcanic activity caused the sediment from a large collapsed mountain to dam the river. In fact, most of the water is rainwater rather than spring water, which is the source of the river. It is a huge puddle of water.
You have to take a boat ride when you come here. It costs a bit, but it's a pretty nice experience.
