What is American Village Like?

American Village is a multi-purpose commercial resort town in Chatan, in central Okinawa Main Island, modeled after the streets of the American West Coast.
It is home to a wide variety of facilities, from unique shops selling fashion, miscellaneous goods, and interior items to restaurants, hotels, and a movie theater.
The spacious grounds are lined with colorful buildings, and the open location overlooking the sea is enhanced by American pop-style decorations.

The History of American Village

From 1945, near the end of World War II, this area was used as the U.S. military base known as Hamby Airfield.
After it was returned by the U.S. military in 1981, urban redevelopment of the Approx. 38-hectare former site began.
Following land reclamation in 1988, plans were made to create a town that strongly reflected the atmosphere of the United States, making use of the area’s character as a region with a concentration of U.S. military facilities in Japan.
Against this background, Mihama Town Resort American Village was born, with facilities opening gradually from 1997 and the area reaching near completion in 2004.
An exotic urban space blending American and Okinawan culture was created, and it continues to develop today as a hub for local交流 and a symbol of a new identity.
