MERI, a specialty cloth zori shop operated by Orange Tokyo Co., Ltd., reopened after renovations on Hokusai-dori Street in Ryogoku, Tokyo, in 2026. Twelve years after first opening in 2014, the shop has been reborn in a new location in the same Ryogoku neighborhood. The new shop stands midway between the Edo-Tokyo Museum and the Sumida Hokusai Museum, where traces of Edo meet Sumida's artisan culture.

Each pair of MERI cloth zori passes through the hands of several artisans: one knits the cords, another weaves them into zori, another makes the straps, and another attaches them. The shop grew out of a knitwear factory established in Sumida City in 1948. To preserve the local industry around Honjo, once a major center of knitwear production, the factory still uses knitting machines that have been operating since before World War II. While many cloth zori are made from fabric cut into narrow strips, MERI knits its own dedicated cords from hollow fibers. This creates its signature feel, both durable and soft underfoot.

Since the brand was launched in 2012, it has produced several thousand pairs of cloth zori. The shop also holds popular cloth zori-making workshops. (Reservations required)
