Kikko park

Kikko Park is a historical park developed on the site of the former residence of the Kikkawa clan, the lords of the Iwakuni domain. The extensive grounds are home to Kikko Shrine, Kinko Kaku, which is registered as a tangible cultural property of Iwakuni City, remnants of samurai residences from the Edo period, and various other historical treasures. It has also been selected as one of the "Top 100 Historical Parks in Japan," highlighting its significant heritage and historical value.

The park features flower beds, a Japanese garden, the inner moat around the former Kikkawa residence, and the Kikkawa and Shiroyama Iris Gardens, which are open to the public free of charge, adding to the park's seasonal charm. Particularly noteworthy is the springtime bloom of about 1,500 cherry trees along the Nishiki River near the Kintaikyo Bridge, creating a picturesque scene that draws crowds of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) enthusiasts. In autumn, the park is also known for its ginkgo trees that turn a brilliant gold.

A large fountain in the center of the park creates arching jets of water that can produce rainbows, adding to the park's allure. Benches placed throughout offer restful spots not only for locals but also for tourists looking for a break during their walks, making it a beloved place of relaxation for many.
