Iimoriyama

At the eastern edge of the Aizu Basin, Iimoriyama is a leading tourist destination in Aizuwakamatsu City, attracting around two million visitors a year. The 314-meter-high hill can be ascended not only by foot but also via a paid escalator for easy access.

This spiritually significant mountain, steeped in myths including those of Yamato Takeru, is packed with attractions. The magnificent view from the summit, offering a panoramic view of the Aizu castle town, is just one highlight. Midway up the slope sits the important cultural property "Aizu Sazaedo," built in 1796. Originally housing the Western Japan Thirty-Three Kannon deities, it was believed that praying here bestowed the same blessings as visiting all the thirty-three Kannon temples, making it a cherished spot among locals.

Moreover, several sacred sites commemorate the Byakkotai, a youth military corps of 16 to 17-year-olds formed during the Boshin War of 1868. Visitors can pay respects at the graves of 19 members who committed seppuku, the seppuku site nestled in the woods on the southern slope, and the graves of 31 members who died in battles across Aizu, reflecting on their loyalty and tragic fate.

After descending the mountain, stopping by nearby "Byakkotai Traditional History Museum," "Byakkotai Memorial Hall," and "Former Takizawa Honjin" deepens the understanding of Aizu's history.
