At the thatched-roof village in Miyama, I had also been looking forward to visiting the Miyama Folk Museum. I wanted to see the traditional household items and farming tools preserved inside and learn more about how Miyama residents lived in the past. Unfortunately, it happened to be closed when I visited, so I could only admire the historic thatched-roof building from the outside.

Although I was a little disappointed, just standing outside and looking at the traditional thatched-roof house against the surrounding forests and rural scenery still felt very much like the Japanese countryside. The peaceful surroundings made me naturally slow down and take in Miyama’s unique atmosphere.

This visit left me with a small regret, but it also gave me another reason to return. I hope the museum will be open the next time I visit Miyama so I can actually go inside and see the traditional artifacts.
