Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine

One of Yakushima’s signature scenic spots, located at an elevation of 600 to 1,050 meters, with dreamlike landscapes wrapped in deep forest and moss. It is popular as a place where visitors can experience the island’s clear streams, giant trees, and moss-covered forest with all five senses.

There are 3 trekking courses, ranging from the beginner-friendly Yayoi Sugi Course, which takes about 70 minutes, to the advanced round-trip Taiko Iwa Course, which takes about 4 hours. Along the way, visitors can see Yakusugi cedars that have stood for ages, including Nidaioosugi, up close. As you go deeper, the forest becomes denser, and the ground is covered with ferns and vivid moss. Together with the clear waters of the Shiratani River flowing through the primeval forest, the area opens into scenery as lovely as a garden. Among its highlights, the “Mossy Forest” is said to have inspired a famous animated film, and its mystical sight with sunlight filtering through the trees is not to be missed.

From Taiko Iwa, reached by continuing up the mountain trail, you can take in sweeping views of Yakushima’s magnificent mountain range. On rainy or misty days, the moss shines even more brightly, creating an even more dreamlike atmosphere—one of the special charms of this place.
