Yoron Island
Be captivated by spectacular natural scenery, from an elusive sandbar to a star-filled night sky.
Located at the southernmost tip of Kagoshima Prefecture, Yoron Island lies about 14 miles north of Okinawa Island. Coral reefs encircle this small island, which measures about 14.7 miles around and features white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters known as “Yoron Blue.” Blessed with a warm subtropical climate, the island offers a peaceful pace of life far removed from the city, amid landscapes brightened by hibiscus and bougainvillea.
One of the island’s signature scenic spots is Yurigahama, a sandbar that appears about 0.9 miles offshore from Okaneku Beach on the island’s eastern side. The white sandbar emerges from the sea only when the tide recedes significantly, creating a striking contrast with the emerald-green water. Visitors can also search the sand for star-shaped grains known as “star sand.” According to a romantic local legend, finding as many grains as your age will bring you happiness.
The island is dotted with beaches, each with its own character, including Okaneku Beach, whose white sand stretches for about 1.2 miles. A wide range of marine activities is also available, including snorkeling and diving, with opportunities to encounter sea turtles and colorful tropical fish in the clear water.
After sunset, the starry sky is another highlight. Efforts are underway across the island to reduce light pollution from nighttime illumination, creating an ideal environment for stargazing. In fiscal 2021, Yoron Island was recognized as the darkest place in Japan.
To learn more about the island, consider stopping by the Southern Cross Center. Its exhibits introduce Yoron’s natural environment, culture, performing arts, and everyday life, while the observation room on the top floor offers views extending to northern Okinawa Island and the surrounding islands. Visiting early in your trip will give you a deeper understanding of the landscapes before you and make your time on the island even more meaningful.
