Tokunoshima Island

One of the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, this southern island is home to lush subtropical nature and a distinctive culture. In 2021, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site as part of “Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Northern Part of Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island” in recognition of its precious island ecosystem.

One of its most iconic rare species is the Amami rabbit, a nationally designated Special Natural Monument found only on Tokunoshima and Amami-Oshima. The island is also home to endemic plants and animals that form its distinctive ecosystem.

The coast features white-sand beaches and distinctive shorelines formed by uplifted coral reefs. Tropical fish and sea turtles can be spotted in the crystal-clear waters, and humpback whales sometimes visit in winter. Lush forests cover mountains such as Mount Inokawa and Mount Amagi, creating a natural haven for rare plants and animals.

Bullfighting, with a history of about 400 years, is another distinctive part of Tokunoshima. Highlights include the powerful clashes between the bulls and the excitement that sweeps through the entire venue.
