Ishikawa Insect Museum
One of the leading insect museums on the Sea of Japan coast, with extensive indoor and outdoor facilities.
Located at the foot of the nature-rich Shishiku Highlands, this was the first full-scale insect museum on the Sea of Japan coast. Its many exhibits introduce insects from Ishikawa and around the world, including live insects, a wide variety of specimens, and dioramas modeled on four insect habitats around the globe, such as woodlands and jungles.
The Butterfly Garden is one of the largest free-flight butterfly greenhouses on the Sea of Japan coast. It recreates a tropical environment where around 1,000 butterflies of approximately 10 species flutter freely. Outdoors, the Ecology Garden features a pond-centered biotope inhabited by wild insects and small animals. Visitors can borrow insect nets to catch them and observe them up close.
The museum also presents the appeal of insects from various perspectives through hands-on activities, insect-raising lessons, insect art displays, and special exhibitions. A popular photo event held on Sundays and public holidays lets visitors wear a hat with a butterfly perched on it.
