Gifu Castle Rakuichi Market
Oda Nobunaga’s Castle Town Reborn! A Must-Visit Gifu Destination Packed with Local Flavors and Unique Shops.
Gifu Castle Rakuichi Market opened in April 2025 at the foot of Mount Kinka, where Gifu Castle towers above. Inspired by Rakuichi-Rakuza (free markets and free guilds), an economic policy introduced by Oda Nobunaga, who ruled Gifu, to promote development throughout his domain, the facility allows visitors to fully experience Gifu’s appeal and warm hospitality.
Wooden, single-story buildings line a street with Gifu Castle and the Three-Story Pagoda directly ahead, evoking the atmosphere of a historic castle town. The 11 shops at Gifu Castle Rakuichi Market offer a wide variety of food, particularly local Gifu specialties such as Hida beef nigiri sushi, Hida beef skewers, and Kei-chan (seasoned grilled chicken) rice bowls. There is also an excellent selection of sweets perfect for enjoying on the go, including candied fruit and soft-serve ice cream.
Located within Gifu Park, the facility is also just two minutes on foot from the Mount Kinka Ropeway station. One way to enjoy your visit is to purchase a bento box, hot dog, or other food at the facility before heading to the summit and savor it while taking in the scenery. Gifu-themed sweets and goods are also available, making it a convenient place to stop for souvenirs.
