Hiroshima Castle Grand Chrysanthemum Exhibition

Held in the Ninomaru grounds of Hiroshima Castle, this is one of Japan's largest chrysanthemum exhibitions. First held in 1972, the event has continued for over 50 years and is now a beloved autumn tradition that draws many Hiroshima residents and tourists.

In 2026, the special flower bed will brighten the venue with the theme "Miyajima in Aki, Adorned with Chrysanthemums," honoring the 30th anniversary of Itsukushima Shrine's designation as a World Heritage Site.

Around 1,200 pots of chrysanthemums are on display, including large-flowered varieties with blooms around 20 cm in diameter and Fukusuke chrysanthemums, whose large blooms and short stems resemble Fukusuke good-luck figurines. Members of the Hiroshima City Chrysanthemum Enthusiasts Association devote considerable time and care to these impressive displays. Highlights include cascading chrysanthemums, shaped to resemble flowers growing on a cliff through repeated pinching to encourage branching, and bonsai chrysanthemums that take over 1 year to complete.

Cut chrysanthemums and potted plants are sold at the venue. There is also a chrysanthemum-growing advice corner for beginners, along with workshops and concerts featuring koto music and gagaku, traditional Japanese court music.
