Mt. Moriyoshi, also known locally as "Mt. Akita" and popular as a ski resort in winter. The Ani Gondola takes only 20 minutes to the 1,167-meter-high summit station, making it easy for anyone to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountain.

We originally planned to see the snow monsters, but because of the weather, only the bare branches were left.
It was a little disappointing, but on that cold, rainy, snowy day, a special cup of hot coffee really warmed me up.
It made the trip feel warm and sweet.

Akita Nairiku Jukan Tetsudo (Akita Inland Railway)

This railway literally goes across Akita’s inland, connecting almost 94.2km between Takanosu and Kakunodate Stations. The route is along Japan’s traditional local scenery and its beauty puts smiles on locals and tourists. Thus, the name “Smile Rail” for this popular railroad.

Hopping on the train with the Tamatebako bento service was such a joy!
At every stop, they bring you local ingredients—it feels like you’re tasting the care of the land the whole way.
That rich, home-cooked “farm mom” flavor isn’t just delicious; it feels like a series of connected stories, filling the ride with warmth and little surprises.

Hinokinai River Embankment

Along the Hinokinai River, which runs through the center of Kakunodate Town in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, a row of Somei Yoshino cherry trees stretches for Approx. 2 kilometers. Planted in 1934 to commemorate the birth of the Emperor Emeritus, Approx. 400 trees color the riverbank in a landscape designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Together with Bukeyashiki Street, it is also one of Japan's 100 best cherry blossom spots.

It was my first time in many years seeing a whole riverbank covered in cherry blossoms in full bloom. It was so beautiful I was speechless (and kept taking photos).
When the wind blew, the petals drifted down like snow. It really felt like sakura snow.

Samurai Residences in Kakunodate

In Kakunodate, part of the city of Semboku in Akita Prefecture, exists rows of old houses first attributed to the Ashina family in the early Edo period (around year 1620), that later flourished under the castle town of the Satake-Kita family. This district has been designated as protected in an effort to conserve traditional buildings.

Because it was raining, we just did a quick photo stop and then took a little sightseeing loop around in the car.

Akita Station

Akita Station is the gateway to Akita Prefecture, served by the Akita Shinkansen and local train lines. It is the largest station in Akita Prefecture, used by Approx. 20,000 passengers a day, from local residents to tourists. In recent years, the station and its connected buildings have been renewed, creating new appeal.

After a long busy day, I was originally just looking for some late-night robatayaki in Akita.
But I unexpectedly found a Michelin Bib Gourmand-type popular spot right by the station (I noticed the award inside the restaurant).
Even better, you can pick your fish directly from the day’s catch, though some had already sold out by then.
I went in just wanting to check it out, but every dish was delicious.
It was such an unexpected little highlight of the trip!

Sato Yosuke Shoten Flagship Store

This long-established shop has inherited the Inaniwa udon production method established by the first generation Inaniwa (Sato) Kichizaemon in 1665.

I had a great time at Sato Yosuke experiencing the fun of hand-pulled noodles.
From savoring the aroma, to feeling the dough in my hands, to finally taking a bite of warm noodle soup,
it felt like I was recording a part of this trip through my taste buds.
The flavors were simple, but it was one of the happiest meals.

Akita really knows how to promote tourism.
As soon as we got off the plane, we were given peach juice from Akita Prefecture. So thoughtful (they knew we were thirsty)!
The trip hadn’t even started yet, and we were already feeling all the sweetness〜🍑

Akita Inu no Sato (Akita Dog Visitor Center)

Sightseeing in Odate-shi interchange facilities opened in 2019 near JR Odate Station. The building is modeled after the Taisho era Shibuya station building, named after Japan's most famous Akita Inu dog, "Chuken Hachiko" (loyal dog Hachi).

A quick 30-minute Akita dog interaction session:
I thought I was going there to play with them,
but it turned into them being all clingy and begging for pets.
Akitas are honestly so cute it feels unfair—are they trying to adopt me? 😂
(Though to be fair, I’m actually kinda scared.)

Kansagu (Ukiki Shrine)

Kansagu, also known as Ukiki Shrine, is a mystical shrine situated by the lakeside, dedicated to Princess Tatsuko from the legend of Tatsuko-hime. The shrine was named in 1769 by Masuto Soshu, a haiku poet and samurai of the Akita domain. It is called Ukiki Shrine because it enshrines a large driftwood (floating tree) that washed ashore.

In winter, the Tatsuko statue at Lake Tazawa is supposed to be covered in snow,
but because of the unusually warm winter, the ground was totally bare—there wasn’t a single patch of snow.
It’s a familiar view, but without the snow, it looked completely different.

Tamagawa Onsen

Tamagawa Onsen has the strongest acidic spring in Japan, known as “the therapeutic hot water.” From the source spring called “Ofuki,” 98°C hot water gushes out 9000 liters / min. It is by far the biggest hot spring.

To get in during the winter restrictions, you need to follow right behind the bus into New Tamagawa Onsen.
Soaking in the healing baths while looking up at the starry sky was a rare experience.
