I've always enjoyed looking for roadside stations throughout Japan, so I'd been looking forward to visiting this one. The first time I came to Kouri Island, it happened to be closed, so I could only make a quick stop at the nearby beach to watch the sunset. On this second visit, I made sure to check the business hours so I could finally make up for missing it last time.
After actually browsing around, I really wasn't disappointed. It's packed with local Okinawan specialties, such as delicious, fresh, crisp sea grapes and various locally produced chili peppers and peppercorns. Since I enjoy cooking, discovering local ingredients during my trip and bringing these distinctive seasonings back to Taiwan felt like quite a find.
Whenever I return to Taiwan after a trip and miss the Okinawan sunshine, I use these souvenirs to cook a homemade meal, and it feels like I'm reliving those wonderful memories. If you enjoy collecting local ingredients and seasonings, I recommend adding this fun and convenient Kouri Island roadside station to your itinerary.
