Dazaifu, where the Museum stands, is an important hub in Japanese ancient history. It was a place to govern the Kyushu Region where lots of exchanges with the world were taking place. With that background, this 4th national museum was opened in 2005 with the unique concept “Understanding Japanese culture formation in the Asian historical view.”

The main curation is the huge display room on the 4th floor, Cultural Exchange Exhibition, which shows the history of cultural exchange between Japan and Asian / European countries. Under the theme “Ocean Ways, Asian Paths,” the time from Paleolithic Period to Edo Period is divided into five and works that depict each cultural exchange are displayed. To show Japan’s cultural exchange from various aspects, exhibitions are changed often. You can find something new each time you visit.

Family favorite is Ajippa, a free hands-on exhibition to let you enjoy colors, shapes, patterns and smell from different countries. You can try playing musical instruments and toys, make crafts and experience something new. Ajippa offers workshops for children and adults alike.

Special exhibitions focused on culture and history are held from time to time. Check the website before you come. The museum is connected to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine’s approach with a moving walkway, which takes about 10 minutes on foot.
