Hamamatsu Castle Park

Hamamatsu Castle Park is a verdant haven in the heart of the city that surrounds the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Edo shogun spent his early days. As an insider’s tip, it also doubles as a popular oasis for the locals to kick back and relax.

The park spans some 10 sprawling hectares, serving as a true treasure trove of nature with delightful seasonal flowers all year around. Many know this as a tried and true spot for cherry blossoms, with a full spectacle of about 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees blossoming in spring. Swing by during late March to early April to see the blooms illuminated at night, creating a stunning scene that’s backed by a picture-perfect Hamamatsu Castle. As an extra perk, there's even a traditional Japanese garden laid out in the miyama style, boasting beautiful views of new spring greens, weeping cherries, and autumn leaves.

Hamamatsu Castle itself stands perched with a view out over the city from atop a centuries-old stone foundation with a newly reconstructed castle keep. Once inside visitors are greeted with exhibits detailing the castle’s history and panoramic view out over Hamamatsu, Enshu Sea and Lake Hamana out from the top floor. Travelers and locals in the know both love this spot for its central lawn, a popular spot for strolls and picnics on weekends, as well as the teahouse Shouin-tei, complete with tea service (fee applies) while overlooking the garden.
