Established in 1601, this mine operated for 388 years extracting and producing gold and silver ore. The total length of the sprawling gold mine is approximately 400km, earning it the title of Japan's largest gold and silver mine. In total numbers the mine has yielded a colossal 78 tons of gold and 2,330 tons of silver, hurtling it to its top-notch status of Japan’s largest gold and silver mine.

The prospered in its heyday during the gold rush, drawing some 50,000 eager miners from across Japan. Operations ceased as of 1989, giving the chance to reopen with its mine shafts, mining hubs and refineries made open to the public.
Today you can step inside for a thrilling glimpse at the mine’s remains and a deep dive look at the evolution of mining technology and production systems that echo the history of Japan’s economic development.

Special spots to note include the Sodayu Mine, excavated by hand in the early Edo period (early 17th century) and the Doyu Mine, where actual mining took place until the end of operations. These areas keep well-maintained routes inside the tunnels and are freely accessible. Some routes feature preserved carts and machinery, offering a realistic glimpse into the mining scenes of the past.

Tours, including industrial heritage tours guided by knowledgeable guides and a walk-through attraction offering MR experiences and projection mapping are available by reservation on the official website.
