Founded more than 1,600 years ago, this shrine enshrines Toyokiirihiko no Mikoto, the deity said to have pacified the area that includes present-day Utsunomiya. Locals affectionately call it “Futaarasan,” and despite being in the heart of the city, its sacred grounds are surrounded by lush greenery.

Pass through the 31.8-foot-tall grand torii gate and continue along the approach lined with Approx. 100 stone steps, and you will reach the shrine grounds spread across a small hill at an elevation of 443 feet. In addition to the main shrine, 12 auxiliary shrines are scattered throughout the grounds, offering a wide range of blessings, including good fortune, business success, family safety, protection from evil, and safe childbirth.

You will be welcomed by the majestic main hall built in the shinmei-zukuri style and the kagura hall, where ritual performances are held. The shrine also houses treasures such as the Sanjuhakken Hoshi Kabuto and iron komainu guardian dogs, both designated as nationally recognized cultural properties. Another highlight is the chance to encounter important historical materials that speak to the shrine’s long history and cultural value as you offer your prayers with a clear mind.

Also worth checking out is the “Gyoza Omikuji,” which has recently gained attention in the media. This unique shrine item, where you pick a baked gyoza-shaped fortune slip placed in a frying pan with chopsticks, is an idea that could only come from Utsunomiya, the “city of gyoza.” Open it up, and you’ll find a lucky charm shaped like a gyoza inside, making it a fun way to tell your fortune and a memorable souvenir of your visit.
