Gontaro Kinkakuji Branch
Its dashi made with Kyoto groundwater and carefully selected ingredients is exceptional.
Located along Kinukake no Michi, the sightseeing road connecting Kyoto landmarks Kinkaku-ji Temple and Ryoan-ji Temple, Gontaro Kinkakuji Branch is housed in a compact building with a distinctly Kyoto feel. Inside, the space has been renovated from a 100-year-old traditional Kyoto townhouse, creating an atmospheric setting where you can enjoy your meal at a relaxed pace.
The restaurant takes pride in its "Golden Dashi," a carefully prepared broth made every morning using Kyoto’s underground water, known for its high-quality soft texture. This broth is used in the signature Kyoto-style udon hot pot, the famous Gontaro Nabe, filled with carefully selected ingredients, as well as in soba, udon, and a variety of à la carte dishes.
There is also a wide selection of dishes, including seasonal à la carte items made with ingredients unique to Kyoto, tempura, and rice bowls. Popular menu items include the Yuba Ankake Soba Gozen, in which the ingredients are wrapped in large sheets of yuba and topped with a thick savory sauce, as well as zenzai with handmade shiratama dumplings kneaded with fragrant roasted soba grains.
In the evening, you can enjoy a distinctly Kyoto-style dining experience with classic dishes such as simmered herring sticks and teriyaki chicken, as well as obanzai paired with delicious local sake.
