Chikugo River Fireworks Festival

A traditional event with more than 370 years of history that brilliantly colors the night sky over Kurume.

Last update :

Originating from dedicatory fireworks held in 1650 to celebrate the completion of Suitengu Shrine, this is a beloved summer tradition in Kurume with a history of over 370 years. One of the largest fireworks festivals in western Japan, it lights up the surface of the Kurume River and the night sky with Approx. 15,000 spectacular fireworks.

There are six viewing areas, in Kyomachi, Sasayama, Komorino, Nagatari, Miyaki, and Tosu, with fireworks launched from two sites set up on the opposite banks of the Kyomachi and Sasayama venues. Because there are two launch sites, each viewing area offers powerful fireworks from a different angle.

The large fireworks blooming in the night sky are also beautiful reflected on the river, drawing cheers from the crowd with each launch. Food stalls are often set up every year, giving the event the lively feel of a summer festival. The combination of light and sound is also impressive, and because the venues are close to the riverbed, one of the highlights is experiencing dynamic displays powerful enough to resonate through your body. As this popular fireworks festival draws 400,000 visitors every year, coming by public transportation is recommended.
