Ibaraki Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Izura

Set along the coast of Kitaibaraki City in Ibaraki Prefecture, this art museum honors the achievements of Okakura Tenshin, a major figure in the development of modern Japanese art. It also presents artworks with a focus on modern and contemporary Japanese painting.
After Okakura Tenshin relocated the Japan Art Institute, Izura became the place where he pursued creative work together with Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, Hishida Shunso, Kimura Buzan, and others. At the museum on this site, visitors can explore the history of Japanese art while also enjoying the natural scenery of the Izura Coast.
Inside the museum are three exhibition rooms for special exhibitions, as well as the Okakura Tenshin Memorial Room. Through Tenshin’s letters and personal belongings, along with works by artists connected to Izura, visitors can learn about his achievements and ideas in the history of Japanese art. The museum also offers a full range of facilities for enjoying art, including an art information library, a video gallery, and an auditorium.
Located on a small hill, the museum’s observation lobby offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the scenic Izura Coast. After viewing the exhibitions, visitors can relax at the cafeteria or museum shop.
