Tsurugajo Castle in winter has a quiet, charming beauty.

The white snow covering Japan’s only red-tiled castle tower creates a completely different scene from summer or cherry blossom season. Walking through the castle grounds feels like traveling back 500 years to the Aizu era, and every angle has so much character.

It may be cold, but the view is absolutely worth it. If you visit Fukushima, this classic castle definitely deserves a place in your memories!

Tsurugajo Castle in Aizu-Wakamatsu is truly a fascinating old castle.

What makes it especially unique is that it’s the only castle keep in Japan that has preserved its red roof tiles.

It has a different charm in every season.

Cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fall foliage in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter all make you want to come and experience the beauty of the four seasons.

Tsurugajo Castle offers free guided tours, and you can also scan a code to watch explanatory videos. It’s a historic site that’s being maintained with great care.

The castle is seriously impressive—one look and you can tell it used to be a big-deal landmark.

The weather wasn't great when I visited—there was a light drizzle and the cold wind was really biting. I only stayed for a short while before leaving.

The pure white castle with cherry blossoms as a backdrop is absolutely gorgeous. At night, the castle is lit up and you can enjoy the cherry blossoms under the lights too.

It's listed as one of Japan's top 100 castles. The main keep tells the story of the Byakkotai, the brave young warriors from the end of the Edo period.

The castle keep is on higher ground, so you'll need to take your time walking up.

The cherry blossoms here are stunning! You really have to visit in person to experience it.
