Sakurai Futamigaura’s Couple Rocks, ranked among Japan’s 100 best sunset spots, are one of Itoshima’s most iconic landmarks.

Unlike the usual vermilion torii gates, a pure white torii stands at the edge of the beach, while the Couple Rocks in the distance, tightly bound together by a heavy shimenawa rope, complement each other. They symbolize a lifelong bond and sacred protection.

Although the weather was overcast, the clear seawater gently lapped against the fine sand, accompanied by a soft sea breeze. Just sitting on the shore and gazing into the distance was very soothing. If you visit at sunset, you can also see the spectacular sight of the sun slowly sinking between the two rocks. It’s a beautiful beach view worth enjoying quietly.

Known as the backyard of Fukuoka locals, Itoshima offers a relaxing time by the coast even without a car. This time, I took a Showa Bus directly from Hakata Bus Terminal to Meoto Iwa, avoiding the hassle of transfers. Transportation was more convenient than I expected.

Before leaving, I recommend picking up some picnic snacks at Hakata Station, including a box of Nunu Chicken, a Hakata specialty that is especially crispy, sweet, and spicy when eaten cold. After arriving at Meoto Iwa, find a spot to sit on the beach. In front of you are a pure white torii gate standing in the deep blue water and the rocks connected by a shimenawa rope. Enjoy your picnic with the sea breeze and the sound of waves hitting the shore.

Since the coastal buses run on a fixed schedule, if you're not driving, you can do what I did and choose one or two places to explore at a leisurely pace. This time, I opted for afternoon tea at Itoshima Sabo, which faces the ocean. Since it was fall, I ordered the seasonal chestnut Mont Blanc, pairing its chestnut flavor with black coffee. I simply sat quietly by the window, cleared my mind while looking out at the sea, and enjoyed a carefree, slow-paced afternoon. In the evening, I leisurely took the bus back to bustling Hakata Station, feeling fully recharged in both body and mind.

If you have the chance to visit Yamaga Onsen, be sure to set aside time for Yachiyoza, the century-old wooden kabuki theater. For travelers who appreciate traditional culture, I recommend buying a combo ticket with the Yamaga Lantern Folk Art Museum directly at the ticket counter so you can take in the best of the town’s craftsmanship in one visit.

I was very lucky during this visit and happened to catch a local group rehearsing onstage. Watching the central revolving stage turn smoothly and change the scenery almost like magic, I was amazed but had no idea how it worked. After the rehearsal ended, I followed the narrow wooden stairs down into the secret basement beneath the stage. Only when I saw it with my own eyes was I deeply struck by the wisdom of the people who built it. The seemingly effortless movement onstage was powered entirely by people working together with all their strength to push a massive, heavy wooden axle in a dark, cramped space. It was genuinely moving.

Back on the tatami in the audience area, I found a comfortable corner and sat quietly. Looking up, I saw vintage advertisements for local businesses from a century ago painted across the ceiling. The wooden beams and pillars gave off a deep, tranquil scent of age, and every detail told of the prosperity that continued from the Edo period into the Meiji period. Being there was not only a feast for the eyes but also an immersion in authentic local culture. It was a truly rare cultural experience.

A long time ago, I saw the Yamaga Lantern Festival, and this small town has stayed deeply etched in my heart ever since. During this visit to Kumamoto, I took a Sanko Bus from the area around Kumamoto Castle for a little over an hour and finally fulfilled my dream of visiting Yamaga.

After just a few turns, the noise of the city faded away, and Yamaga revealed its simple, peaceful charm. As I strolled along the quaint streets, I saw elaborate lantern displays everywhere. When I got tired from walking, there was a free footbath in front of the tourist information center where I could soak my feet with Kumamon. The slightly damp, rainy weather was perfect for a bowl of ramen, so I went into the popular local restaurant Dairin Ramen. The rich, mellow broth warmed my stomach and had a very down-to-earth local flavor.

As a coffee lover, my most delightful discovery was BANANA CAFE. The owner made the decision to return home to take over the family fruit shop, cleverly combining it with a love of coffee. As I sat inside enjoying this special drink, I could hear neighborhood Japanese grandmothers exchanging casual greetings while choosing fresh seasonal fruit. The air was filled with the rich aromas of coffee and fruit. This warm, welcoming sense of human connection is exactly why I find myself so deeply captivated by Japan's hidden small towns. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys discovering small towns in Japan.

Compared with the quiet Kamitori Shopping Arcade, the lively Shimotori Shopping Arcade is the busiest shopping district in central Kumamoto, with everything from food and entertainment to all kinds of shopping.

If you’re looking for shoes, you can head straight to ABC-MART. If you want to slow down, you can step into Tsutaya Books, browse magazines, and pick out some stylish Japanese lifestyle goods. Along the way, there’s also the toasted aroma of Narutotaiyaki and the mouthwatering scent from Daishin, a long-established restaurant known for its eel rice.

After you’ve worn yourself out shopping, don’t miss dinner at the Michelin-recommended Katsuretsutei. I personally recommend the Shinshigai main restaurant. The golden, crispy, thick-cut pork cutlet is certainly a juicy classic, but what I remember most is their giant fried shrimp. The coating was light, thin, and crisp, while the shrimp was firm and springy. Every bite was packed with fresh, sweet seafood flavor and was incredibly impressive. It was the most memorable meal of my trip to Kumamoto! The entire Shimotori Shopping Arcade is very lively and can definitely satisfy everything a traveler could want.

Compared with the lively and bustling Shimotori Shopping Arcade, Kamitori Shopping Arcade has a more elegant and relaxed everyday atmosphere. Its high, spacious, and bright arcade has fewer tourists, making it very comfortable and pleasant to stroll through.

Many hidden gems are tucked away inside the shopping arcade, such as the century-old Nagasaki Bookstore and Kumamoto Yatai Village, which brings together local cuisine and a lively atmosphere. Both are great places to slow down and browse leisurely in the early evening.

This time, I happened to stay at a comfortable apartment hotel next to the shopping arcade with views of Kumamoto Castle, so the arcade was just around the corner. From the hotel's rooftop, you can take in the beautiful sunset turning the Kumamoto cityscape red, and after dark, quietly admire Kumamoto Castle illuminated by soft lights. I recommend staying near Kamitori Shopping Arcade—it makes for an excellent lodging experience.

Integrated with the Kumamoto bus terminal, SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto is a new landmark combining transportation, shopping, and leisure. Located midway between Kumamoto Station and Kumamoto Castle, it is very convenient to get to.

The complex is filled with major Japanese brands and local specialty foods, making it a great place to browse. This time, I happened to come across a lively “Taiwan Festival” in the outdoor plaza. Sampling familiar snacks and tea drinks from home along the food stalls and experiencing the rich flavors of Taiwan on the streets of another country felt especially comforting and surprising.

At the end of your visit, don’t forget to take a walk through the rooftop garden. Not only is there a huge, round, lovable Kumamon statue to take photos with, but you can also enjoy the breeze while overlooking the sparkling city at night and Kumamoto Castle in the distance. The expansive, romantic view left me with warm memories of this trip to Kumamoto.

Kumamon Square is the most infectiously cheerful place in the entire city, and I recommend stopping by during your trip.

The most anticipated attraction is the meet-and-greet performance on holidays. As soon as the Manager appears, he waves his arms, dances around, and gives it his all. His adorably goofy yet energetic interactions instantly fill the whole venue with laughter and are incredibly uplifting. Inside, there is also a dazzling selection of exclusive merchandise and the Manager’s office, with everything from plush toys and stationery to souvenirs. Even if you weren’t a fan before, it’s hard not to be won over by this pure, enthusiastic, and immersive atmosphere of joy—and to happily take a few items home with you.

Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s most renowned castles, was built by the famous general Kato Kiyomasa. It is known throughout the country for its impregnable stone walls and stately black castle keep, steeped in centuries of history from the Warring States period.

This fortress, which embodies the spirit of Kumamoto, has endured many hardships. After the long and difficult reconstruction following the powerful 2016 earthquake, it unexpectedly faced another major earthquake recently, which was deeply distressing. I sincerely hope that, with everyone’s support, this beautiful castle can once again be restored to its former appearance.

This time, I visited at sunset in October, when the castle grounds were open for special nighttime viewing. As dusk fell, I slowly walked from the lively castle town, looking at the carefully restored and neatly numbered stones and the imposing castle towers. Everywhere, I could see the extraordinary resilience of the people of Kumamoto and the dedication of its craftspeople.

Once night had fully fallen, warm golden lights illuminated the towering black castle keep, making it appear even more mysterious, composed, and majestic against the deep blue night sky. Walking beneath the ancient castle walls in the darkness, I was deeply moved by the spiritual strength of a place that has overcome disaster and continues to stand firm. It left a lasting impression on me.

The area around Kumamoto Station is extremely convenient, and the nearby AMU PLAZA Kumamoto is a major shopping destination.

Inside, you'll find a wide selection of Japanese clothing brands, household goods, and a well-stocked fresh food supermarket, making it a great place to browse and shop. It's also a true dessert paradise. You can try “honeycomb ice cream” topped with a whole piece of real, natural honeycomb, enjoy the exceptionally rich and creamy “ASO MILK” soft serve from Aso, or buy a bottle of milk to savor at your leisure.

After leaving the mall and heading back into the station, don't miss the freshly baked croissants from the popular il FORNO del Mignon, where there's always a line. They're fragrant, crisp, and perfectly browned. Step outside to the station plaza, and you can hop right onto Kumamoto's century-old streetcar and travel through the city to the sound of its cheerful dinging. The connections are seamless, easy, and convenient!
