To avoid the crowds, I set out for Kiyomizu-dera at 6 a.m., and unexpectedly ended up seeing Kyoto’s first snow.

At that hour, there were very few visitors, and the whole of Mt. Otowa was so quiet that I could hear the faint sound of snowflakes falling. As soon as I entered the temple grounds, the rustic main hall and the towering Nio-mon Gate, lightly covered in the first snow, were outlined in pure, delicate lines. Standing on the almost empty Kiyomizu Stage and looking out, the Kyoto cityscape and mountains were wrapped in a soft silver-white veil of snow. The usual worldly bustle was gone, replaced by an almost sacred sense of stillness and airiness.

Having this snow-covered Kiyomizu-dera all to myself in the crisp morning air, without any noise around me, made this unexpected first snowfall the most luxurious and unforgettable scene of the trip.
