Snow monsters are considered a rare phenomenon even on a global scale, and it is said that outside Japan they can only be seen in Germany.
In particular, it is no exaggeration to say that the kind of snow monsters seen in the Hakkoda Mountains can only be found in Japan.
The landscape is fantastical and mysterious, with an eerie atmosphere as well.
The best time to see them is around January to February.

The Hakkoda Mountains are home to Hakkoda Ski Area, where visitors can enjoy a variety of popular winter activities, including skiing and snowboarding.

Located on Mount Tamoyachidake, one of the peaks of the Hakkoda Mountains, the Hakkoda Ropeway connects the lower station with the Summit Park Station at an elevation of 1,314 meters in just 10 minutes.
The ropeway is popular with a wide range of visitors, from sightseers eager to admire the Hakkoda Mountains' spectacular seasonal scenery to summer hikers and winter skiers.
Operating year-round, it offers a different landscape in every season-from fresh greenery in mid-May and vibrant autumn foliage from late September to mid-October to the famous snow monsters from January through late February.
Autumn is especially popular, as visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the colorful mountains both from the gondola and the summit. Every October, around 100,000 people ride the ropeway to experience this spectacular seasonal display.

With a history spanning more than 340 years, Sukayu Onsen is one of Aomori's most renowned hot spring destinations.
According to legend, an injured deer once healed its wounds in the hot spring, giving rise to the name Shika-no-Yu ("Deer Hot Spring"), which is said to have gradually evolved into Sukayu Onsen over time.
The onsen's best-known attraction is the Hiba Sennin Buro, a vast public bathhouse built entirely from Aomori hiba cypress. Spanning the equivalent of 160 tatami mats, it features five bathing areas, including Atsu-no-Yu, Hie-no-Yu, Shiburoku-no-Yu, and Yutaki.
It is also one of the few places in Japan where the traditional custom of mixed-gender bathing has been preserved.

With a history spanning more than 400 years, Yachi Onsen in Aomori Prefecture is regarded as one of Japan's three great hidden hot springs, alongside Iya Valley Onsen in Tokushima Prefecture and Niseko Onsen in Hokkaido.
The inn preserves the nostalgic atmosphere of a traditional toji hot spring retreat and stands at the foot of the Hakkoda Mountains, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Its secluded setting, surrounded by pristine nature and the nearby Yachi Wetlands, is another of its major attractions.

Spanning Jogakura Gorge in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Jogakura Bridge carries the Route 394 bypass across one of the region's most spectacular landscapes.
Measuring approximately 360 meters in total length with an arch span of about 255 meters, it is one of Japan's largest deck arch bridges.
Standing around 122 meters above the gorge, the bridge offers breathtaking views straight down into the dramatic valley below.
From the bridge, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Hakkoda Mountains, Mount Iwaki, and even Aomori City, with the scenery transforming beautifully throughout the seasons.

Located near Sukayu Onsen, Jigokunuma (Hell Pond) was formed around 800 years ago by a volcanic eruption in the Hakkoda Mountains.
Covering an area of approximately 4,500 square meters, the pond was created when hot spring water filled the crater left by the eruption.
Fumaroles, remnants of the area's volcanic activity, can still be seen around the pond, and the air is filled with the distinctive scent of sulfur. These otherworldly surroundings gave rise to the name Jigokunuma, meaning "Hell Pond."

This marshland pond is located along National Route 103, also known as the Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line, between Sukayu Onsen and Yachi Onsen.
Although it cannot be seen from the road, a walk of about two minutes along the boardwalk from Route 103 leads to the pond. Once there, you'll find numerous ponds of varying sizes scattered throughout the surrounding wetlands.
